RHS Ammi majus Seeds by Mr Fothergill’s produce tall, airy plants covered in delicate lace like white flower heads. This hardy annual is easy to grow and brings lightness and movement to summer borders.
Ammi majus reaches approximately 90cm in height with a spread of around 30cm. The fine white umbels sit above soft green foliage and create a cloud like effect in planting schemes. Flowering from June to September, it provides months of elegant colour.
This variety performs well in full sun or partial shade. It prefers well drained soil and benefits from consistent moisture while establishing. Once growing strongly it is tolerant and reliable.
Ammi majus is especially valued in cottage garden planting. It works beautifully at the back or middle of borders where it softens bold colours and blends different plants together. The flowers are excellent for cutting and are widely used in fresh bouquets. The stems add structure and a natural feel to arrangements.
This variety has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit for dependable garden performance. It is part of the seed range produced by Mr Fothergill’s in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society. Gardeners can expect consistent germination and strong results in UK conditions.
For outdoor sowing, sow from March to May in a prepared seed bed in flowering position. Sow thinly in rows 30cm apart and cover lightly with 0.5cm of fine soil. Firm gently and keep moist. Seedlings appear in 14 to 28 days. Thin to 25cm apart once large enough to handle.
For indoor sowing, sow from March to April in trays of seed compost. Cover with a fine layer of compost and keep at approximately 15 to 20°C. Remove cover when seedlings appear. Transplant 5cm apart in trays before hardening off in late May. Plant out 25cm apart after risk of frost.
RHS Ammi majus is an elegant and versatile plant that brings softness, height and reliable summer flowering to the garden.
